Guide

Your first measurement

With the Sub + speakers path you measure the subwoofer first, then the speakers, and in a few minutes you get a first suggestion for crossover and level.

Before you begin

  1. Connect the iPhone to your system

Use a cable, USB, HDMI or Bluetooth, and pick your system under Audio output on the Measure screen. Don't use AirPlay: iOS keeps it silent while the microphone is recording. Headphones and the iPhone's own speaker won't work: the sweep has to play through the speakers in the room.

  2. Sit at the listening position

Hold the iPhone where you usually listen, at ear height. A stable support is best; if you hold it in your hand, keep the same position, height and orientation until the end.

  3. Keep the room quiet

TV off, windows closed. The Noise check on the Measure screen tells you the conditions before you start.

  4. Set the volume and leave it

A normal listening volume, neither a whisper nor a concert. Keep it the same until the end of the session: measurements can only be compared at identical volume.

Choose a path

On the Measure screen, choose a path, then tap Start measurement: choosing a path doesn't start it.

  • Sub + speakers. The recommended path to begin with: two guided sweeps, then crossover and level. It's the Guided session described below.
  • Subwoofer only. One sweep: the sub's response, with the room's peaks and dips.
  • Speakers only. One sweep: the speakers' response, where they start to roll off, peaks and dips.

Two questions about your system

Before the first sweep, Slope asks how your system is set up. If you're not sure, choose I don't know: you can still carry on, you'll just get less personalized advice.

  • How does your system manage bass? Choose The amplifier manages the crossover if your AV receiver takes the bass away from the speakers and sends it to the sub. Choose I adjust the crossover on the subwoofer if you set the crossover with the sub's knob and the speakers get the full range.
  • How is the subwoofer's polarity set? Look at the phase switch on the back of the sub: Normal (0°) or Inverted (180°). It's the starting point for the Summation check.

The sweeps

  1. Subwoofer

Turn the speakers off and leave the sub where it usually sits, then tap Start subwoofer sweep. Keep the iPhone still during the sweep: the bar on the right shows how much signal reaches the microphone.

  2. Speakers

Turn the speakers back on and the sub off, then tap Start speaker sweep. Change nothing else: volume, crossover, phase and the iPhone's position stay as they were.

  3. Level

The Level check shows how much louder or quieter the sub plays than the speakers. If you like, adjust the sub's gain and tap Measure the sub again: the speakers don't need to be measured again.

  4. Result

Tap Show results: you'll find the graph with both curves, the crossover advice, the Summation check and the Suggestions. The measurement is saved in the Library.

A measurement describes the spot where you held the iPhone and the system as it was set during the sweeps. If you change something, measure again and compare.
